CT in the Evaluation of Vertebral Burst Fractures

Abstract
CT is now the method of choice for evaluating spinal trauma.
The author had a retrospective study for traumatic burst fracture of spine with simple X-ray and CT.
During the period of 2 years from June 1984, the radiological and clinical evaluation had been made on 20 patients suffered from vertebral burst fracture which were confirmed by the radiological examination.
The results were as follows;
1. Among 20 patients, single spinal injury was 15 cases(75%), multiple level injuries were 5 cases(25%).
2. Level of spinal injuries were as follows; Most frequent site was thoracolumbar junction (T_(11)-L©ü) in 12 cases(60%), and lower cervical spine (C©ý-C_(7)) in 3 cases(15%).
3. All the burst fractures showed spinal canal narrowing with impingement of bony fragments in axial CT, an4 we were found exactly posterior element fractures with CT, which were difficult to detect with simple X-ray.
4. Multiplanar reconstruction images were more favorable to detect the character of retropulsed vertebral body fragments.
